Selectamark Celebrates 25 Years as a Secured by Design Member

Selectamark Security Systems is celebrating 25 years as a Secured by Design member, marking a significant milestone in the company’s long-standing commitment to police-approved crime prevention, forensic marking and asset identification. 

Founded in 1985, Selectamark has established itself as a trusted UK supplier of theft-deterrent property marking solutions, helping everyone from homeowners to law enforcement agencies protect valuable assets, deter theft and reduce opportunities for crime. 

Selectamark became a Secured by Design member in 2001. Since then, the company has continued to develop innovative property marking and forensic identification technologies under the SelectaDNA brand. Designed to deter theft, support police investigations and improve the chances of recovering stolen property, SelectaDNA solutions provide an effective way to protect and identify valuable assets. 

Why Secured by Design Membership Matters 

Secured by Design is the official police security initiative that recognises products and services designed to meet nationally agreed standards for crime reduction. Its Police Preferred Specification provides police forces and security professionals with an independent, tested benchmark, reducing the need to assess individual security products themselves. 

For customers, from tradespeople and retailers to businesses and public sector organisations, Police Preferred Specification accreditation provides confidence that a product has met a recognised, police-tested standard, rather than relying solely on manufacturer claims. 

Both SelectaDNA and BikeRegister products have achieved Police Preferred Specification accreditation, supporting crime prevention across a range of areas, including burglary prevention, robbery reduction, vehicle crime prevention, cycle theft prevention, tool theft deterrence, metal theft reduction and asset protection.

A great example of this is the work Selectamark has undertaken to tackle tool theft, partnering with the Metropolitan Police to encourage tradespeople to mark their tools. Following enforcement activity and police operations, many stolen items have been successfully reunited with their owners.

Then, of course, there is the well-known BikeRegister scheme, which continues to play an important role in cycle security and recovery.

What's Next: Continued Innovation 

Selectamark continues to develop new solutions in response to emerging crime priorities, including supporting police forces in tackling Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG).  

Durham Constabulary has offered SelectaDNA Personal Defence Spray to domestic abuse survivors as part of a VAWG project, using forensic marking to help identify offenders and strengthen prosecutions. The approach was recognised by the College of Policing as an effective solution in its VAWG toolkit.
