SelectaDNA Backs Thames Valley Crackdown on Tool Theft
SelectaDNA is partnering with Matthew Barber, Police & Crime Commissioner for Thames Valley, to roll out an ambitious series of free tool‑marking events designed to strike back against rising tool theft and give tradespeople powerful protection.
Delivered in partnership with Thames Valley Police, the initiative builds on successful collaborations with the Met, Sussex Police and other forces this year, marking a major step forward in safeguarding tools and supporting local trades.
Matthew Barber, Police & Crime Commissioner for Thames Valley, explains:
“We know that 4 in 10 tradespeople have experienced tool theft across the UK. Tools are essential for their livelihoods and often represent a substantial financial investment. That’s why our free tool marking sessions are so important.
At these events, tradespeople will have the chance to come along and pick up a tool marking kit, register it with SelectaDNA and then be able to walk away knowing that they have made their tools and livelihoods safer from opportunistic thieves.”
Wide-spread support across policing units
This force‑wide rollout is a major undertaking for Thames Valley Police, with all five Local Command Units set to take part in delivering the events. Ahead of the launch, officers across the force are receiving specialist training from SelectaDNA to ensure every session offers consistent, high‑quality support for tradespeople. The programme represents one of the most extensive tool‑theft prevention efforts undertaken in the region, giving local teams the skills and resources to help keep tools and livelihoods safer.
Marking tools with SelectaDNA is a highly effective way to protect equipment: it deters opportunistic thieves, makes stolen items traceable, and increases the likelihood of recovery. Once registered on Secure Asset Register, tools can be identified and returned to their rightful owner if stolen, giving tradespeople peace of mind and safeguarding their livelihoods.
A clear message to tradespeople of Thames Valley
Matthew Barber reiterates, “If you are a tradesperson based in the Thames Valley, I would urge you to attend one of our free tool marking sessions. There is no need to register, with the first session taking place at Screwfix in Bletchley on Monday 2 March from 8am.”
