Asset Protection for New Nuclear Power Station

We have supplied Hinkley Point C with SelectaDNA and Secure TESA Security Labels to mark and protect approximately 4,000 valuable assets including tools, IT equipment and other electronic devices.

The asset protection project is a partnership between EDF Energy, Selectamark and G4S Secure Solutions. G4S are providing the facilities management and security services for the duration of the construction of Hinkley Point C. At the peak of its construction, Hinkley Point C will have over 5,000 personnel on site every day.

As well as the discreet, synthetic DNA markings on the protected items, there will also be secure, numbered TESA Security labels for asset tracking purposes. SelectaDNA warning signage is on display across the huge site to warn people against stealing marked equipment.

Hinkley Point C nuclear power station is a project to construct a 3,200 MWe nuclear power station with two EPR reactors in Bridgwater, Somerset. The plant which has a projected lifetime of 60 years, will cost in the region of £20 billion.

Franck Cannon, Site Security Manager, at Hinkley Point C said: “When we conceived our site-based theft reduction initiative, Operation DENY FAGIN, we wanted to include a robust deterrent that would dissuade the thief from taking our property and SelectaDNA was an obvious choice. James Brown has visited the Hinkley Point C nuclear construction site on a number of occasions and has demonstrated a true understanding of our challenge.

“We are extremely pleased to add Selectamark’s theft-reduction ‘tool-set’ to our layers of defence to ensure we deliver a risk-proportionate and cost-effective protective service. The ability to mark our vulnerable assets with a unique code will also help us recover stolen property and prosecute offenders. We hope to continue this collaborative partnership throughout the remainder of the construction project.”

James Brown, Managing Director of Selectamark, commented: “I first visited the site in July 2019 as part of The Security Institute’s ‘Protecting a Regulated Construction Site’ conference. It was a fascinating day and I was fortunate to meet Richard Osborne, the Security Contracts Delivery & Quality Manager. We discussed the challenges they face on site and I was sure we could help them implement a valuable extra layer of security to protect their key assets. The professionalism and expertise of the whole security team on site is second to none, and it’s a privilege to be providing our solutions to the project.”
