UV pens provide an economic and easy way of marking equipment with an invisible mark that only shows up under a UV light.

If security is an issue, we would always recommend the use of a SELECTADNA forensic coding kit  or a SELECTAMARK stencil marking kit ahead of UV pens for the following reasons:

• UV pen markings are not visible to the naked eye, and therefore do not act as such a big theft deterrent.
• UV markings are not permanent. The mark is degradable over a period of about 12 months, particularly if situated in direct sunlight or by the heat generated by electrical equipment like computers. We recommend marks should be re-applied on a regular basis.

However, if your budget doesn't stretch to the cost of one of these kits, then using a UV pen is much better than doing nothing at all and is still recommended by many UK Police forces as a bare minimum in terms of property marking.
