| ![]() Sunderland Police Grease The Way To Capture Lead ThievesWednesday, 27 January 2010
Over the past few months there has been a rise in the number of incidents where lead has been stolen or attempted to be stolen, particularly in the south of the city. Local Police are now making sure lead gets coated with forensic marking product SelectaDNA Grease. Anyone touching the lead is immediately covered in the grease, which is impossible to remove. The Grease contains a special DNA code that will help police identify those responsible. Lead on properties in Silksworth, Farringdon, Doxford Park and Herrington is being coated. Neighbourhood Inspector Cheryl Warcup, who is responsible for Sunderland South policing team, said: "SelectaDNA is unique in that anyone who comes into contact with anything which has been coated in the grease will find it on their hands and clothing.” She added: “It's impossible to remove so when we find those who are responsible they are without a doubt linked to the theft." Inspector Warcup added: "I'd also like to remind scrap metal yards of the responsibility they have in making sure the origin of the metal they are being sold is genuine. “We're asking them to be extra vigilant and make sure they're complying with the law as they can play a huge part in putting a stop to the thefts of metal by making it even more difficult for offenders to sell on their stolen goods. The information they give us is also crucial in helping us identify those responsible." The details scrap metal dealers are required to log by law are: For further press information and images contact: Angela Singleton, Press Officer for Selectamark. Mobile: 07905 623 819.
