South Molton Takes A Stand Against Rural Theft A MARKET town in North Devon took a stand against theft recently when local police held a successful property marking event using Selectamark products to highlight the importance of crime prevention to local residents.

Organised by PCSO Jerzy Rozputynski from South Molton police, the event took place at the busy Pannier Market, near Bideford, in the morning and then moved on to the local Mole Valley Farmers retail outlet in the afternoon.

Local community police and Selectamark’s Roger Lyddon carried out demonstrations throughout the day showing interested members of the public how to mark items of property using stencil and compound marking kit Selectamark and latest forensic product SelectaDNA.

The Selectamark system enables individuals to permanently and visibly mark their property using a post-coded stencil. SelectaDNA, which contains a unique DNA code and a UV marker, is being used by many police forces in schemes throughout the UK and has been proven to reduce burglaries by up to 85% in some areas.

With a population of approximately 5,000, South Molton is considered a safe place to live and the likelihood of being a victim of crime remains well below the national average. It is mainly urban, but borders a number of rural villages, where there has been some domestic burglary reported. Farms have also been targeted and expensive agricultural machinery stolen.

Roger Lyddon, said: “The property marking event organised by South Molton police was a great success. We were inundated with interest from members of the public for the products we demonstrated to them.
“All the Selectamark stencils we bought with us were sold, we handed out 150 ultra violet pens and marking booklets, and there was significant interest in our latest SelectaDNA product.”

The South Molton and District Crime Prevention Panel are planning to run another property marking day in the near future.
