Essex NHW Deploys DNA Trap to Catch Burglars

A NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH group are helping to target criminals in a hard-hitting crackdown on burglaries from homes, garden sheds and garages in Braintree, Essex.

Braintree Neighbourhood Watch has linked up with Essex Police to make SelectaDNA property marking kits available to local residents.

SelectaDNA has already been deployed successfully in other areas of Essex, however, this new scheme is aiming to cut thefts and burglaries in the Braintree district.

SelectaDNA is a liquid which contains a unique DNA code registered to a specific address. It can be easily applied to household items of value including TVs, jewellery, bikes, garden tools and other expensive goods. The product is almost invisible when applied and does not damage valuable property in any way.

If a marked item is stolen during a break-in and later recovered by police it can be easily traced back to the rightful owner. It will also link a burglar directly to the crime scene, increasing the chances of a successful conviction in court.

Hi-visibility stickers that can be placed in windows and doors indicating that homes are protected by SelectaDNA are issued with every kit.

Stephen Armson-Smith, Crime Reduction & Architectural Liaison Officer for Braintree District Council area, said: “No burglar wants to be caught with DNA-coded property in their possession, as the items would be extremely difficult for them to sell-on and they could be instantly linked to the crime scene and face immediate arrest.”

He added: “SelectaDNA is a proven way to reduce burglaries and we are confident that it is the ideal tool for us to deploy in order to clampdown on domestic, shed and garage burglaries in the area.”
