Domestic Burglars Are DNA Targets In Reading

THE latest crime prevention tool is being offered to people in Lower Caversham, Reading, to protect their homes from burglars.
 
SelectaDNA marking kits are being distributed to 300 residents by the local neighbourhood policing team.
 
John McNicholas, Reading’s Crime Reduction Advisor, said: “Tackling burglary remains a priority for Thames Valley Police. Although the number of burglaries in Caversham is relatively low of late, this type of crime can have a severe effect on the victim in both emotional and financial terms.”

The domestic SelectaDNA kits contain a uniquely coded non-toxic liquid which can be easily painted on to items of value such as laptops, televisions, games consoles and jewellery. The liquid is clear but shows up under UV light. If a marked item is stolen and recovered by police it can be traced back to the owner via the DNA code.

The kits also contain high-visibility warning labels and window stickers. Marked properties will be registered onto a secure national database.

In addition to property marking, the neighbourhood officers are offering general crime reduction advice.
John McNicholas, said: "Schemes like these work best when local residents know what is happening and are being helped to do something about crime in their area.
 
“Our teams will be going door-to-door and explaining how DNA property marking works. They will also help residents fill out the necessary registration card.

“SelectaDNA’s main strength is its deterrent value. It has been proven that domestic burglars are staying away from homes and belongings which are DNA protected. We are also aware that the ‘fear factor’ comes into play as burglars know that DNA property marking is helping police convict criminals.”
