For those of you who are carrying out a project, there are some important points to remember when distributing the kits and showing members of the public how to use them. Please find these useful tips below: Mark any property, which has the potential to be stolen in a burglary or other, related crime. Anything can be marked except paper and fabric items. The most important items to mark are electrical items such as televisions, laptops, games consoles etc. Ensure the area to be marked is clean, dry and free from contamination such as polish. Where possible, disconnect any electrical devices being marked from the power supply. Shake the bottle well before use to distribute the dots evenly in the solution. Mark items with a single, thin layer, in grooves and corners so that even if removal is attempted, some of the solution will remain for a sample to be taken and analysed. Avoid smooth, flat surfaces where possible. Although touch-dry in approximately 30 minutes, the mark will take around one week to cure completely. If marking items which will be kept outside, apply solution on areas which are less likely to be exposed to direct sunlight - ie on the underside of a bike frame. As the solution is an adhesive, do not apply SelectaDNA to any moving parts (screws, hinges etc.). Avoid contamination and rinse the applicator after use so that it remains soft for future applications. Ensure without fail that the SelectaDNA window stickers are put up in visible places such as on front windows and doors. This is the most important part of the process in order to prevent burglaries. Complete the individual SelectaDNA registration forms in full for each address and get the occupier to sign it. Attach one of the 3-part barcode labels to the registration form. Take the completed form away with you – don’t leave it behind for the owner to misplace or forget to send back! Return all the completed forms by registered mail to the designated representative in charge of returning the forms to Selectamark.
